We build products, and we build the teams that ship them.

Epic Software Labs is a product engineering studio in London. We work with founders taking something from prototype to production, and with established businesses that need a specialist for a problem their team has not solved before.

The work is deliberately hands-on. Every engagement is led by someone writing production code on it, which is what keeps the architecture honest — the people making the load-bearing calls are the same people who have to live with them.

We stay small and take on few engagements at a time. That is a constraint, not a growth stage: it is what lets us go deep enough on a domain to make the calls that matter, rather than staffing a project and checking in monthly.

How we think

  • Engineers first

    We are engineers who adopted AI, not an AI shop that hired engineers. That order matters: AI amplifies judgement it cannot replace, and the amplification is only worth having if there was real engineering underneath it to begin with.

  • Ship, then argue

    A working system in production settles debates that a document never will. We optimise for getting something real in front of users early.

  • The trade-off is the decision

    Every architecture is a set of things you chose not to have. We write those down, with the reasoning, so the next person understands why.

  • Adoption over elegance

    A model nobody trusts and a platform nobody uses are both failures. We build the validation path alongside the system.

  • Fit the runway

    The textbook answer often assumes time and budget you do not have. We find the version that unblocks the commercial moment without wrecking the architecture.

How we work

Most teams build the feature that was asked for loudest. We map the whole opportunity space first, put a return against every item on it, and build in that order — AI-leveraged, with a human accountable at every step.


  1. 01

    Map the world

    We go deep on the domain before proposing anything — the operation end to end, where money moves, where time leaks, and what the real constraints are. The output is a map of every opportunity worth naming, not a requirements list.


  2. 02

    Put a return on it

    Every opportunity on the map gets a number: what it is worth, what it costs to build, and how confident we are in each. Anything that cannot carry a number gets labelled as such rather than quietly slipped into scope.


  3. 03

    Sequence by return

    The roadmap falls out of the numbers — biggest return first, not the loudest stakeholder and not the easiest ticket. Where two are close, the one that unblocks the others goes first.


  4. 04

    Build at speed, human in the loop

    We are engineers first, and AI amplifies that rather than substituting for it — which is what collapses delivery timelines the way it does. A person still owns every architectural call, every review, and everything that reaches production. The acceleration is real; the accountability does not move.


  5. 05

    Measure, then re-map

    We check the shipped result against the return we projected. Where the projection was wrong, the map gets redrawn — that feedback loop is what keeps the sequence honest as the business moves.

Epic Software Labs was founded by Mayur Kale, an engineer who has spent a decade building and leading teams — from pre-seed startups finding product-market fit to national-scale government and payments platforms.

He also works directly with founders as a fractional CTO, separately from the studio. If that is closer to what you need than a build team, that work lives at its own home.
